ABSTRACT

Based on the investigations of natural populations and laboratory cultures, the main stages of vegetation, biotopes (habitats), and annual cycle of the development of Microcystis aeruginosa Kütz. emend. Elenk. as microbiocenosis were studied. The alga is assigned to colonial heterotopic ubiquists. Its vegetation cycle includes the following stages of development: benthic, planktonic, neustonic, and pleustonic, as well as the stages of occurrence in extraaquatic environment (escapes on shores, aeroplankton). Problems dealing with the sequence of stages and survival of algae in different biotopes are discussed.
