AB In this study an electrospray atomizer is successfully used to generate polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) microparticles from
polymer solutions. Experiments are performed to determine atomization enhancement by minute ion addition of NaCl
to allow for an increase in flow rate or polymer concentration, thus improving the system throughput. In contrast to theoretical scaling laws, a fourfold increase in conductivity through ion addition has no significant effect on particle size. Changes in flow rate cause changes in particle size such that d ≈ Q0.5, in agreement with previous correlations.
The usage of ion concentration instead of conductivity as a metric for droplet size prediction is discussed.
