PISFV method provides not only the direction of oil shift (i.e. streamlines) but also the magnitude of oil film shift. If oil viscosity and oil film thickness in each point of the model surface are known the shear stress distribution can be determined. But even without precise knowledge of these parameters the boundary layer transition is clearly visualized on the model surface. Physical background of boundary layer transition visualization by PISFV method is discussed. Examples of boundary layer transition visualization at different flow parameters from subsonic to hypersonic flows are presented.
