要約

This paper presents the planning, implementation, and assessment of a two-year, four-week summer program entitled Florida Education in Geology and Ecology: FLEDGE-ling Camp for Girls. We address selection of participants, and objectives and program activities. Exit surveys and follow-up interviews indicated that the girls learned most from the field and hands-on activities that were undertaken, and that these were also identified as the most enjoyable by the girls. The program served to teach the girls about the ecology and geology of Florida, but it had two additional important outcomes:

  1. Between the first and last day, the girls formed a very different view of science and scientists, such that they even identified themselves as scientists.
  2. Parents and teachers expressed a change in attitude toward science and increased confidence in science abilities in girls who had participated in the program.
In follow-up activities undertaken during the school year, some of the science concepts presented during the summer were reinforced and we were able to ask how the program had affected participants' attitudes toward math and science classes. Programs like this are needed to encourage girls to pursue science and to recognize girls' and women's abilities to be scientists, regardless of the paths they ultimately choose.
