FAST APPROXIMATE METHOD FOR VCSEL-MMF TRANSVERSE MODE COUPLING ANALYSIS

This work presents a fast approximate method for analysis of transverse both fundamental and low-order as well as higher-order mode coupling at connection of the vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) and the silica graded-index multimode optical fiber (MMF). Proposed solution is based on the earlier developed modified Gaussian approximation extended for analysis of weakly-guiding optical fibers with arbitrary refractive index profile in the core region bounded by single solid outer cladding. This approach provides a derivation of analytical expressions via overlap integral for the estimation mode coupling coefficients under VCSEL centered launch conditions as well as offset or small angular misalignments. We produced a passage from VCSEL light beam spot radius to some generalized equivalent mode field radius for description of transverse mode set by the Gaussian approximation and following analysis of coupling between VCSEL and fiber transverse modes. Some results of VCSEL launching simulation under both centered connection and misaligned conditions are represented.
