FAILURE ANALYSIS OF MULTICELL COMPOSITE BEAMS UNDER CONSTRAINED TORSION

The failure analysis of multicell composite beams when subjected to constrained torsional loading is presented in this paper using the MSC Patran/Nastran finite element package. The model was first verified with the published results to ascertain the model accuracy. The constrained condition analyzed is that of the cantilevered multicell beam with torque applied at a free end of the beam. The effects of stacking sequence on the failure load are demonstrated and the best suited stacking sequence for the constrained torsion problem is suggested. The effects of different geometrical configurations (prismatic, different taper angles, and different lengths) on the failure loads are also examined in this paper. At the end a comparison of the widely used composite failure theories is given.
