Interannual and Seasonal Changes in the Concentration of Chlorophyll α and Primary Production in the Deepwater Section of the Black Sea

Data on changes in water temperature and chlorophyll concentration in the surface layer of the deepwater section of the Black Sea registered in 1978−2008 are generalized in the paper. The pattern of long-term dynamics of phytoplankton primary production is judged from these data, and also from changes in the intensity of illumination and phytoplankton physiological activity. The average per month changes in primary production in the cold and warm periods are analyzed. The trends of phytoplankton productivity, water temperature, and chlorophyll α content were calculated in terms of their average per month values. For 30 years, valid trends of the studied parameters were not revealed. The maximal concentration of chlorophyll α was observed at a low temperature of water in winter and spring, whereas its minimal concentration − in summertime.
