EFFECTS OF SILVER AND COPPER NANOPARTICLES ON GAS AND LIQUID PERMEABILITY OF HEAT-TREATED SOLID WOODS

Effects of a 400 ppm aqueous dispersion of silver and copper nanoparticles on the gas and liquid permeability of heat-treated beech, poplar, and fir wood were studied here. The size range of both metal nanoparticles was 10−80 nm. Longitudinal cylinder specimens of 17.5 mm in diameter and 30 mm in length were impregnated under 2.5 bars of pressure for 20 min, using the empty-cell method (Rueping process). Control, nanosilver, and nanocopper-impregnated specimens were divided into three groups of unheated, heat-treated at 100° C, and heat-treated at 150° C; in total, nine treatments. Gas permeability values were measured under seven different vacuum pressures in a single run and the correlation of each was analyzed with two liquid permeabilities as first-drop and 50-mm-lowering times; both liquid permeabilities were measured using an RILEM test tube. Results showed that permeability in all three species increased by the impregnation. A high coefficient of determination was found between specific gas permeability with liquid permeability. Furthermore, cluster analysis showed that the effects of heat treatment depended on two main factors: density and permeability of the woody species.
