In the resin-injection pultrusion process, when the liquid resin is injected through the injection slots into the continuously pulled fiber reinforcement, the liquid resin not only penetrates through the fibers, but also pushes the fibers away from the chamber walls causing fiber compaction in the transverse direction and thus making resin penetration more difficult. At low injection pressures, the liquid resin cannot effectively penetrate through the fibers; whereas at high injection pressures, the compaction is so high that the resin penetration becomes essentially impossible. Thus, complete wetout can be achieved only for a specific range of injection pressures for a particular set of processing parameters; this pressure range is referred to as the operational envelope. In this work, the resin flow behavior with fiber compaction is modeled and presented with reference to defining the operational envelope.
