Nanotubes are very thin cylindrical tubes which diameters range from 1 to 100 nm and which height can reach several micrometers. For some years, thermal studies concerning pool and convective boiling were led on heated surfaces coated with nanotubes forests. Indeed, theses surfaces were observed to be favorable to an increase of capillarity phenomena and can form numerous and very convenient nucleation sites. In this study, carbon nanotube forests of varying lengths have been implemented on a heated plane surface in order to characterize water boiling heat transfer in a dedicated test bench. Heat transfer intensification has been observed, attributed to an augmentation of active nucleation sites. This technology may be applied to various types of heat pipes, vapor chambers and thermosiphons to increase boiling heat transfer and critical heat flux.
