VORTEX TOPOLOGY OF RECTANGULAR WINGS IN PICTURES, SKETCHES, AND CONJECTURES

Vortex structures around rectangular wings exposed to steady flow are visualized and distilled into vortex line models. Two distinct flow modes were found. In the low angle of attack mode, vorticity production near the leading edge of the wing is balanced mainly by backdiffusion of vorticity into the wing in areas of adverse pressure gradient. In the high angle of attack mode, the vorticity produced is convected mainly into the wake in the form of a vortex sheet surrounding the circumference of the wing and continuallyseparating from it.
