DETERMINATION OF RESIDUAL STRESSES AND STRESS INTENSITY FACTORS BY REMOVING LOCAL MATERIAL

Questions relating to the investigation of the propagation of cracks in the field of residual stresses caused by welding of aluminum plates are considered. The error analysis inherent in the determination of the principal residual stress components by combining the hole drilling method and optical interferometric measurement of the deformation response is presented. It is shown that the accuracy of the experimental approach used is high enough to ensure reliable characterization of the residual stress field in the direction perpendicular to the weld seam. This fact offers the opportunity to determine the stress intensity factors for cracks of different lengths, which are propagated in the field of residual stresses with known parameters. Experimental investigations are carried out using the crack compliance method. Essential measurements of the deformation response on local material removed in the form of a narrow notch are performed by electronic speckle-pattern interferometry. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is illustrated by comparison of the residual stress values obtained by the hole drilling method and determined based on a theoretical solution using the values of the stress intensity factors.
