Results are presented from an experimental study of the penetration of a liquid jet in a gaseous crossflow. The experiments were conducted in an atmospheric pressure facility at crossflow air velocities up to 119 m/s and temperatures up to 300°C using distilled water, acetone, and 4-heptanone as test liquids. Penetration was determined from two-dimensional Mie scattering images of the spray. The results indicate that aerodynamic Weber number and liquid viscosity, through their effect on droplet size and the trajectory of the liquid column, respectively, affect the spray's penetration. Two correlations were developed based on these results that predict the effect of momentum flux ratio, Weber number, and liquid viscosity on spray penetration over the range of conditions studied.
