The use of the homogenization method for models of heterogeneous materials and the related limitations on the use of the homogeneity hypothesis in studying the edge effects are discussed. A comparative analysis of the scale parameters of length for combinations of the model's constants obtained experimentally and those obtained theoretically has been carried out. It is shown that the essential effects of the allowance for the couple stresses are mainly displayed in boundary layers whose thickness is commensurable with the scale parameters of length of a particular material modeled by the Cosserat continuum.
