Up to now, the working fluid during startup period is limited to water only in those precious investigations. However, this is not always the case in practice; the study on solid-liquid two-phase flow is not reported. In this paper, the unsteady flows inside pump are numerically simulated using commercial code FLUENT during startup period when a low-specific-speed centrifugal pump is used to transport the pure water and the solid-liquid two-phase flow, respectively, and then the numerical results are compared with the experimental results of the pure water. In this numerical simulation of startup process, the variations of the rotational speed and flow rate with time obtained from experiment are fitted the function of time, and then are written into program by user defined function. The research results show that when the centrifugal pump is used to deliver the solid-liquid two-phase flow, there exist an overshoot in head during startup period, which is obvious higher than that of pure water. Moreover, the former obviously lags behind the latter to reach the stable operation state during startup period.
