Fire being a common cause initiator, Fire safety in Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs) is addressed systematically utilizing Defence in Depth (DID) Philosophy. In 700 MWe Indian NPPs common Main Control Room (MCR) is designed for twin unit stations. The MCR being common, fire in one unit control panel shall not hamper availability of control panels for other unit and shall not lead to inhabitable conditions for operators in other unit control room. Therefore, ensuring habitability of common MCR is very important in case of fire in the panel. Numerical simulation has been performed to study the effect of postulated fire on adjacent control panels and to assess habitability conditions in the MCR. Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) Code Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) has been used for this purpose. Simulations have been carried out by postulating cable fire inside one of the panel. To analyse habitability conditions, temperature, heat flux, smoke concentration in terms of optical density, toxic gas concentration and visibility were monitored in the MCR. To ensure habitability within MCR, the above mentioned parameters shall remain within acceptable limits. However, self contained breathing apparatus are available for use in case of fire. Dedicated smoke venting provision will further ensure in maintaining the habitability in MCR. Furthermore, Supplementary Control Room (SCR) located in different building will remain available for carrying out essential safety functions in case of fire in MCR.
