Absorption chillers have attracted researchers' attention recently because they are environmentally friendly, run on inexpensive or waste sources of energy, and require small electric motors or engines. Heat from waste steam is efficiently converted into refrigeration. One of the main components in the preferred fabrication method of an absorber is the falling film technique. The absorption phenomena on falling films must be understood to develop smaller and cheaper units.
The absorption performance depends on the solution flow rate, concentration, film thickness, vessel pressure and temperature, etc. There is a sizeable amount of published literature [1−3] which deals with the absorption problem with some form of mathematical modeling [4, 5]. Unfortunately there is lack of available experimental data which can permit true verification of the existing theoretical methods. The situation calls for some experiments on the subject. The main objective of this paper is to examine heat and mass transfer in absorption into LiBr-water solution flowing over a flat copper plate. The distribution of the temperature on the film surface was determined by thermography and the concentration field was calculated on the basis of the temperature field.
