Turbulent partially-filled pipe flow is investigated using Stereoscopic Particle Imaging Velocimetry (S-PIV) in the cross-stream plane for a range of flow depths at a nominally constant Reynolds number of 30,000 (based on bulk velocity and hydraulic diameter). The streamwise velocity distribution is distorted relative to full pipe flow due to the presence of a mean secondary motion and the so-called "velocity dip" phenomenon, whereby the maximum streamwise velocity appears below the free surface, is observed for all flow depths tested. Unlike axisymmetric full pipe flow, distributions of turbulent kinetic energy and streamwise Reynolds normal stress exhibit significant azimuthal variation consistent with the distribution of the large-scale coherent motions which also show a preferential arrangement in space. Ensemble averaged velocity fields conditioned on large-scale streamwise velocity fluctuations reveal that the signature of the large scale structures are distorted even when near the wall and far away from the free surface. When near the free surface the signatures of the conditional large-scale structures changes completely due to the change in boundary conditions from no-slip to nominally no mean shear.
