The determination of the flame temperature by optical means has always been of interest both to investigators of the combustion phenomena, and for combustion process monitoring in industry. However, practical uses of optical flame pyrometry are confined to laboratory experiments and high temperature flames in MHD experimental facilities. In the latter case, where the measured temperatures are above 2000 K, the sodium line reversal technique is used. In the present work, in an effort to reduce the lower limit of the measured temperature to about 1300 K, the infrared vibration-rotational spectrum of carbon dioxide and water vapor is used. The spectral range 2.75-2.89 μm was found most appropriate. The group of methods that we believe to be most appropriate for industrial flame temperature monitoring, have been analyzed, to serve a basis for development of the measuring instrument and procedure. The instrument has been developed and tested both on the laboratory scale flames and in the industrial large scale burner.
