Expansion of high-pressure superheated liquids: multiphase flows and shock effects

Accidents with pressure-liquefied hydrocarbons triggered by total or partial loss of containment may result in rapid boil-up and expansion of the superheated liquid, the energy yield in this process can be high enough to generate blast waves in the atmosphere. In this paper, a one-dimensional model for the "physical" explosion is developed. The main zones existing in the expanding cloud of superheated liquid are considered, including single and two-phase ones. A model is developed under the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium between the phases in the two-phase zone, coupled with Euler equations in the atmosphere. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the energy release rate is limited by the relatively slow propagation of boil-up wave. Efficiencies of the "physical" explosions are shown to be much (by an order of magnitude) lower with those from high explosives (TNT), which has to be taken into account in risk analysis of high-pressure vessels with pressure-liquefied substances.
