A TECHNIQUE FOR RESONANCE MATCHING OF DUAL PERIODIC STRUCTURES IN DIFFRACTION RADIATION OSCILLATORS
RESUMO
The diffraction radiation oscillators with open resonance systems are challenging moderate power sources to be used in the shorter wavelength part of the millimeter-wave band and in the terahertz frequency range. However to improve the efficiency of the energy exchange between the electron beam and resonance field in these oscillators at shorter wavelengths, it is necessary to find novel resonance systems. Another problem concerns crowding of the oscillation spectrum in open resonance structures with shortening the operation wavelength. Among possible ways to overcome the mentioned difficulties one is transition from phase to resonance technique for matching a dual periodic structure in the open resonance system of oscillators of the kind which is followed by essential changes in the field structure of the resonance mode. The paper presents results of electromagnetic simulation of an open electrodynamic system for the diffraction radiation oscillators in which a dual periodic structure is matched with the field in the open resonator by means of a resonance-size step discontinuity in the form of a rectangular groove. It is shown that the use of the resonance technique for matching the dual periodic structure with the open resonator field allows essentially thinning out the spectrum of the excited oscillations and increasing the factor of usage of the resonance oscillation field by the electron beam. Results are presented of comparison of two resonance systems, one based on the conventional phase method and the other on the resonance technique for matching a dual periodic structure at 5-mm wavelengths. The results of the study make it possible to increase the efficiency of the diffraction radiation oscillators of the shorter wavelength part of the millimeter-wave band and overcome difficulties in extending the operation frequency range of oscillators of the kind to the terahertz frequency range.
