A BLIND METHOD FOR ADDITIVE NOISE VARIANCE EVALUATION BASED ON HOMOGENEOUS REGION DETECTION USING THE FOURTH CENTRAL MOMENT ANALYSIS

RESUMO

A blind method for additive noise variance estimation is proposed. The first peculiarity of the method is the use of homogeneous regions' detector based on analysis of the fourth central moment values. The second peculiarity consists in applying iterative variance estimation procedure with correction of homogeneous region map in each iteration. A modification of the proposed method for spatially correlated noise case is described. It implies blind noise correlation level estimation followed by image downsampling with a corresponding factor. At the final stage, the method for noise variance estimation is applied to downsampled image. Performance results for the proposed method are compared to the results for several other modern variance estimation techniques. It is shown that the proposed method demonstrates the best accuracy for both spatially uncorrelated and correlated noise cases.
