RESUMO

Whispering Gallery Mode (WGM) resonators are mainly used to study condensed matter, particularly for the dielectric measurements of liquids. However, the electromagnetic properties of actual resonator structures are still not clearly understood. Therefore, we studied the microwave response of the radially-two-layered quasi-optical resonator in the form of dielectric cylindrical ring fixed between two flat conducting end walls. Typically, a real resonator has an additional layer between the leucosapphire ring and the conducting surface that excludes the possibility of a rigorous solution to the corresponding electromagnetic problem. The leucosapphire resonator has been investigated using numerical and experimental techniques in the Ka-band. It has been revealed a good agreement between the measured and calculated values of frequencies and Q-factors. It was also shown that the resonator allows measuring the complex permittivity of aqueous solutions with an error within 3%.
