Whispering-Gallery Modes in a Hemispherical Dielectric Cavity Resonator Placed on a Plane Substrate with Nonperfect Conductivity

A theory is suggested for the eigenmodes of a hemispherical cavity placed on a finite conducting plane. By imposing boundary conditions on the plane, a functional equation has been obtained, whose solutions determine complex-valued polar indices. Making use of continuity conditions for the electromagnetic field components tangential to the spherical surface of the cavity, one arrives at the dispersion relations, whose solutions determine the spectral properties of the “whispering-gallery” eigenmodes.
