Optimum Filtering of Echo Signals Passing Through a Dispersive Lossy Medium

The problem of optimum reception of the radar echo signal from the object of negligible size has been formulated and analyzed for a medium with an arbitrary frequency dependence of the complex dielectric constant. An expression for the r.m.s. error of the object ranging is obtained. It is shown that the ranging accuracy depends only on the spectral density of the signal and noise while being independent of the pulse form and the degree of its distortion in the medium.
