RESUMO

During the past several years, researchers in the energetic materials community have performed considerable work using submicron, or nanometer-sized particles. The potential for improving performance, reactivity, and mechanical properties through the use of nanometer-sized materials has been widely discussed. The most widely used of these nanometer-sized ingredients has been aluminum powder. Researchers at ATK Thiokol Inc. and RDECOM-ARDEC have teamed together to study the effects of small aluminum particles on a variety of compositions. The impact of nano-sized aluminum on the processing, safety, and initial performance characteristics of several different energetic compositions has been determined. One of these studies has involved the evaluation of nano-aluminum in a promising high explosive. In this study, the influences of nano-versus micron-sized aluminum were determined and compared. This paper presents calculations and data generated in this study.
