Navier-Stokes Computations of Base Bleed Projectiles

RESUMO

The M864 is an extended range projectile which includes both a dome base cavity and a base burn capability. A Navier-Stokes computational technique has been applied to the M864 base burn projectile. The Navier-Stokes technique is described and includes a discussion of applicable boundary conditions. Computed results have been obtained for a flat base and dome base configuration both with and without base bleed. A small reduction in base drag was found for the dome base configuration without base bleed. The addition of hot bleed gas in the base region was found to significantly change the recirculating base flow; depending on the bleed parameter has resulted in a large decrease in base drag. The computed results cover a Mach number range of 0.7 thru 2.5.
