Plankton Centrophyceae (Bacillariophyta) of the Klyaz'ma River (Russian Federation)

A total of 24 species and one variety of diatoms (Centrophyceae) of nine genera dominating in phytoplankton of the eutrophic and heavily polluted Klyaz'ma River was revealed during the period of investigations. Species of the genus Stephanodiscus dominated among representatives of this class, which is typical to the tributaries of the Volga River and its reservoirs. The composition of this group of Centrophyceae depends on the environmental conditions typical to contaminated plain watercourses of the temperate zone with natural hydrological regime. In this case, the degree and dynamics of Centrophyceae quantitative development are typical to the rivers with the catchment area subjected to anthropogenic load, which receives large amounts of sewage with a high content of nutrients and organic matter.
