Effect of Darcy-Prandtl Number on the Stability of Solutal Convection in Solidifying Binary Alloy Systems
RESUMO
The Darcy-Prandtl number (or inverse Vadasz number) effect on solutal convection in a solidifying mushy layer is considered. A near-eutectic approximation and a large Stefan number scaling is employed in the current investigation. The linear stability theory is used to analytically investigate the effect of inverse Vadasz number on both stationary and oscillatory convection in solidifying mushy layers. It is found that as the inverse Vadasz number is increased in magnitude, the transition point, from stationary to oscillatory convection, increases in magnitude correspondingly. It is observed that the inverse Vadasz number plays a passive role in the stability of stationary convection, whilst it stabilizes the oscillatory mode of convection.
