OPTIMIZATION OF ISOTHERMAL PLATE FIN ARRAYS WITH LAMINAR FORCED CONVECTION
RESUMO
The minimum thermal resistance of isothermal plate fin arrays with a fixed array width, number of fins, and either pressure drop or fan power can be found in the literature. In the present study, the thermal resistance is minimized with the number of fins, either volume or width, and either pressure drop or fan power fixed. Only laminar forced convection is considered. The contraction and expansion losses at the inlet and exit are taken into account in the calculation of the pressure drop. The optimal design is characterized by the nondimensional channel length and the ratio of the fin thickness to the channel width. Another nondimensional variable connects the three criteria and coolant thermal properties.
