HIGH-SPEED OBSERVATIONS OF HIGHLY EROSIVE VORTEX CAVITATION USING IMAGE PROCESSING

RESUMO

In order to clarify the mechanism of the severe erosion that results from singular vortex cavitation, we carefully observed the vortex cavitation associated with the erosion around a butterfly valve by means of a high-speed video camera, whose maximum framing rate is 40,500 frames/s. The flow pattern of cavitation was observed using the “correlation method,” which is a digital image-processing technique for analyzing motion by means of a series of images. It is worth noticing the process of the vortex cavitation developing in the boundary between the main flow region, i.e., the orifice jet, and the recirculating region. We came to the conclusion that the cavitating vortex core consists of several tiny vortex cavitations. The rotating velocity of highly erosive vortex cavitation can be also detected by the technique.
