THERMAL PLASMA SYNTHESIS OF RARE EARTH BASED PIGMENTS

RESUMO

A thermal plasma route for preparation of CeO2 based high temperature pigments is reported. The paper describes use of a dc transferred arc thermal plasma reactor for preparation of brown pigment using an intermediate by-product, namely, mixed rare earth carbonates, without the separation of individual component. Various plasma operating parameters have been optimized to achieve stable plasma, as well as the product of acceptable quality. Micro-structural characterization of the product was carried out in detail by XRD, SEM and UV-Vis spectrophotometer (CIELAB parameters), particle size analyzer and correlated with the various plasma operating parameters and composition of the raw material used for color formation. The product obtained in plasma route was compared with the product prepared by conventional route and found to have similar coloring capabilities. It has been shown that, energetically, thermal plasma route is comparable with the conventional route, however, the time required to prepare the pigment is greatly reduced in the plasma route.
