RESUMO

Departure from nucleate boiling (DNB) is one of the important conditions that defines the safety limit in any equipment involving boiling heat transfer, especially in pressurized water reactors (PWRs). This review focuses on analyzing the parametric trends, evaluating the available subcooled boiling critical heat flux (CHF) correlations under PWR operating conditions, and providing an extensive review of the available mechanistic models for calculating subcooled flow boiling CHF. The understanding of the basic mechanism leading to DNB is limited. In recent years, many subcooled boiling CHF correlations, particularly for application to fusion reactors and mechanistic models which are more generic in nature, have been developed. Extending the applicability of correlations developed for circular tubes to rod bundles, a few other factors have to be taken into account such as spacer grid effects. The applicability of existing tube correlations to rod bundles using experimental rod bundle data is studied. Visualization studies supporting and conflicting with the existing mechanistic models are compiled in this paper.
