CHARACTERISTICS OF AN ACOUSTICALLY MODULATED SPRAY ISSUED FROM CIRCULAR AND ELLIPTICAL ORIFICE NOZZLES

RESUMO

The current study characterizes the velocity field and spreading rate of an acoustically modulated liquid spray issued from circular and elliptic nozzles. The axial, radial, and tangential velocities, as well as the droplet diameter were characterized using a three-dimensional phase Doppler particle anemometer. For the unforced case, the jet spreading from the elliptic nozzle is greater than that for the circular nozzle. With forcing, jet spreading for the circular nozzle in the near field and along the minor axis of the elliptic nozzle is greatly enhanced. Forcing leads to improved atomization and the elimination of the near-field acceleration in the velocity caused by the larger droplets in the spray.
