Details of the mineral nutrition of red seaweed Gelidium latifolium (Grev.) Born. et Thur. in an enriched culture

RESUMO

Flows of inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus were investigated in agarcontaining red seaweed from the Black Sea Gelidium latifolium (Grev.) Born. et Thur. In an enriched culture with a scheduled regime of nutrition. During 20 days of cultivation the biomass of Gelidium increased from 1.33 to 2.88 (at 15.5 °C) and 3.41 g of dry weight (at 21.5 °C). Biomass accumulation curves are approximated by an exponential function; exponential curves allow the calculation of the biomass duplication time as 13 days at 15.5 °C and 12 days at 21.5 °C. A decrease of the concentration of organics in the nutrient medium is described by exponential dependence. During cultivation, phosphorus and nitrogen specific uptake rates decreased. The specific phosphorus uptake rate is higher at 21.5 °C than at 15.5 °C. Uptake of nitrogen in the form of nitrate was more intensive at 15.5 °C than at 21.5 °C during the period of the experiment. Up to the 8th day of the experiment, the specific nitrate uptake rate varies slightly; on the day it declines sharply. Nitrite excretion into the medium takes place simultaneously with nitrate uptake; the specific rate of uptake was higher at 21.5 °C, than at 15.5 °C. Curves, reflecting changes in specific rates of nitrite excretion are single-peaked with a maximum on the 8th day.
