T1 LINEAR STABILITY ANALYSIS OF CONVECTIVE FLOW IN A MUSHY LAYER WITH A NON-UNIFORM MAGNETIC FIELD AND PERMEABLE MUSH-LIQUID INTERFACE JF Journal of Porous Media JO JPM YR 2010 FD 2010-11-17 VO 13 IS 10 SP 925 OP 929 K1 convection K1 convective flow K1 hydromagnetic stability K1 flow stability K1 mushy layer AB We consider the linear stability analysis of convective flow in a horizontal mushy layer of constant permeability during alloy solidification with a permeable mush-liquid interface and under the influence of an externally imposed, nonuniform magnetic field. The nondimensional forms of the governing equations are solved for the steady basic-state solution. The linear perturbation system is solved using multiple shooting methods for the neutral stability boundary for different values of the Rayleigh number and the other parameters. We study three cases of the effect of externally imposed magnetic field on the flow during solidification. It is found that the present interface condition destabilizes the convection by decreasing the critical Rayleigh number Rc, but the nonuniform magnetic field has a stabilizing effect on the convective flow in the mushy layer.
