RESUMO

Carbon dioxide hydrate formation is carried out to understand the kinetics of CO2 hydrate formation in porous media for the application of CO2 sequestration. In the present work, CO2 hydrate is formed in silica sand with particle size of 90-500 µm having porosity 38%. Formation temperature and pressure are set at 275.35K and 3.5MPa respectively (providing a driving force of 1.89 MPa). Initially porous media is saturated with water at 100% saturation The results show that hydrate formation is started after 165 min from the start of the experiment, and this time is known as induction time. The total CO2 gas consumed at the end of hydrate formation 10.15 moles. Hydrate nucleation in the reactor occurs at different locations at a different time and with the different rates. Rate of hydrate formation increase at the initial stage and reached maximum value after that it starts to diminishes with time. The final water to hydrate conversion and final hydrate saturation are 25.03% and 27.53% respectively at the end of the hydrate formation experiment.
