RESUMO

Solar thermal hybrid systems have significant prospects to meet desired renewable portfolio standards along with substantial reduction in CO2 emissions at a lower capital cost than that of stand-alone solar plants. Hybridization of concentrated solar thermal energy with coal based power plants for feed-water heating is one of the most promising engineering applications at present. There are various methods for integration of solar energy into an existing fossil fuel power plant but the preheating of feed water using solar energy is the most economically and practically viable option. This technique allows operating solar fossil hybrid power generation systems into two modes: fuel saving or power boost up. In this study a 660 MW supercritical coal based power plant has been chosen for integrating with solar energy for feed water heating. The best improvement in performance can be achieved when the steam extraction for high pressure heaters is replaced by solar field. Hence, solar field is used to preheat feed water thereby replacing the high pressure steam extraction of the original coal based power plant. As a result, the amount of fuel required to heat the feed water within the boiler to produce steam is reduced. An extensively used solar thermal technology i.e. parabolic trough collector has been proposed to preheat the boiler feed water. The proposed plant modification not only saves substantial amount of coal but also helps in mitigating CO2 emissions. The economic and environmental benefits in terms of coal saving and power boosting of hybrid solar-coal power plant have also been presented. The study also discusses about solar collection efficiency.
