RESUMO

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is regularly used today to analyze and solve the problems in a wide range of different industries. CFD tools are especially well-established in the automotive industry. Countless calculations are routinely performed within certain level of accuracy specified by numerical and physical modelling limitations. Applied methods and models are progressively improved. However, at the same timeindustrial applications are getting increasingly more complex, imposing continuously new challenges in this field. Moreover, it is required that CFD provides not just accurate and reliable results but alsoin a cost-effective way. This often leads to compromises in numerical and mathematical modelling. Therefore, this paper tends to provide the authors' view on the CFD present usage and its capabilities in automotive engineering, taking into consideration all aspects related to complex automotive applications including numerical meshes, time and space discretization, turbulence and heat transfer modellingfor gas and liquid flows, incompressible and compressible flows and fluid-solid heat transfer calculations. Two complex automotive applications, namely external car aerodynamics and engine thermal analysis, are presently depicted to demonstrate the feasibility of the modern CFD.
