Resumo

Large eddy simulations are used to study the three-dimensional unsteady turbulent flow around a surface-mounted square cylinder of aspect ratio AR = 5 at a relatively low Reynolds number of Re = 500. Experimental studies of similar flows have revealed that the wake structure behind the cylinder changes with the aspect ratio and is affected by both the tip vortices and the boundary layer on the ground plane. The present simulations used two different subgrid-scale models, namely the standard Smagorinsky model and its dynamic formulation. Of special interest are the complex vortex structures in the near wake of the cylinder.
