RESUMO

The physical problem studied in this paper is the two-dimensional free convection of air in a rectangular cavity with one vertical wall heated and the other vertical wall cooled, the remaining two walls are insulated. Such configuration is well encountered in buildings as insulation system. Solutions are obtained in primitive variables by solving the Navier-Stokes, continuity and energy equations using control finite element method. The main objective of this study is the optimization of the global heat transfer from the hot wall to the cold wall by optimizing the cavity dimensions. Numerical results show that there is no aspect ratio that minimizes the heat transfer between the wall faces. For high Rayleigh numbers, there is been a particular aspect ratio for which the flux is maximum. To decrease enough the heat flux, we use the passive control. We placed two identical plates on the horizontal walls; their role is to break the flow induced by free convection and then reduces heat transfer by convection between the wall faces. The solutions have, as parameters, the Rayleigh number Ra, the aspect ratio Ar and the length h of the plates. It has been demonstrated clearly that the existence of the plates leads to a considerable decrease in heat transfer inside the cavity.
