Resumo

The velocity and passive scalar fields downstream a crossbar, consisting of two slightly heated orthogonal square cylinders, are investigated with the aim of determining how the large scale structures affect the transport of the mean turbulent kinetic energy, ‹q2› (q2 ≡ u2 + v2 + w2 where u, v and w are the streamwise and the two lateral velocity components respectively, the angular brackets denote time averaging), and the scalar variance, ‹θ2. The assessment is performed mainly through second-order structure functions and spectra. Although the presence of the large coherent structures is also felt on the structure functions of q2 and θ2, ‹(δθ)2› presents a different behaviour to ‹(δq)2›.For example ‹(δθ)2› approaches the equilibrium state as observed in grid turbulence ([9]) more rapidly than ‹(δq)2›.
