A high-order Lagrangian/Eulerian method based on the filtered mass density function (FMDF) is employed for large eddy simulations (LES) of Trapped Vortex Combustors (TVC) in multi-block structured grids. The effects of several physical and geometrical parameters on the performance of a simple trapped vortex combustor are studied. The consistency, convergence, and accuracy of the hybrid scheme are established. For a complex TVC, the predictions agree favorably with experimental data reported by Hsu et al. [Journal of Propulsion and Power 14 (1998) 1−12]. The results show that our computational tool can be utilized for design and optimization of TVCs.
