Heat and fluid flow past spherical particles in pulsatory flows

This work is devoted to a numerical investigation of heat and fluid flow past a spherical particle placed in a homogeneous mean flow that is superposed by a component oscillating in the flow direction (pulsatory flow). In particular, mean flows with Reynolds numbers of 100 and 300 are investigated for oscillations characterized by Strouhal numbers in the range between 0.2 and 5. The fluctuation amplitude comprises the range between zero and the mean-flow amplitude. To achieve this, fully three-dimensional (Re = 300 ) and two-dimensional, axisymmetric flow simulations (Re = 100 ) were performed. We found out that even for relatively small perturbation amplitudes the pulsatory component suppresses asymmetries in the wake, which leads to nearly axisymmetric flow and temperature fields. The peak values of cd and Nu vary by orders of magnitude which depend on the fluctuation frequency and amplitude, whereas cycle-averaged characteristics are changed only slightly.
