ABSTRACT

Nanofluids are basically the solid-liquid two-phase mixture of nanoparticles in a base fluid. In comparison with base fluid, nanofluid has higher and enhanced thermal properties [1]. The study of hybrid or composite nanofluid reveals that they have good heat transfer characteristics [2]. In this experiment, CuO, ZnO, and hybrid ZnO-CuO nanoparticles were prepared by using high energy ball milling technique. These nanoparticles were characterized by using XRD, SEM, TEM and were found to be in the range of 30nm-50nm. Polyvinyl alcohol of 3% was used in 1:10 ratio of the mass of the nanoparticle for preparing stable nanofluid. The stability was observed for 16-18 hours for conducting the experiment. The thermo-physical properties of the nanofluid were calculated using various models. The overall heat transfer coefficient, logarithmic mean temperature difference, friction factor and effectiveness of the hybrid material double pipe heat exchanger using the nanofluid were calculated using the NTU method. A comparative study of effectiveness using water and different nanofluid were conducted for verifying that the usage of nanofluid provides better results. At same input conditions the data obtained using ANSYS (FLUENT) 18.2 were compared with the experiment. The most suitable volume concentration of the nanofluid was found out to be used as an effective cooling fluid in the hybrid material heat exchanger.
