ABSTRACT

It is our common understanding that we are living in a period which may be classified as the Energy Revolution. The prior revolution, the Industrial Revolution, has brought a high standard of living to the developed, industrialized nations of the world by accomplishing a transition from hand and animal labor to that of power-driven machinery. Although we have spent about 200 years since the start of the Industrial Revolution, a vast portion of the today's world, the so-called Third World, is just beginning to experience its Industrial Revolution. While today the per capita fuel consumption of the Third World is only about 7 % that of the industrialized nations, it is estimated that by the year 2000 the Third World per capita fuel consumption will increase to 20 % that of the industrialized nations. Thus, the world's energy needs will increase considerably by the 21st century together with the growth of world population as well as the possible Energy Revolution in the Third World.
