ABSTRACT

This paper presents a modelling approach to laser drilling using a moving heat source with the use of a fixed grid and sub region methodology of numerical computation. The methodology uses the concept of liquid fraction to obtain the temperature distribution and the shape of the drilled hole. In addition the piercing time for the generation of a through hole for different material thicknesses and power levels used are obtained from the numerical computation. The results obtained indicate that there is a limit to the power level required to obtain a through hole. The results obtained will have to be verified experimentally.
