Abstract

SKN (Synthetic Kernel) approximation is applied to thermal radiative transfer problems in isotropically scattering inhomogeneous participating rectangular medium. Radiative integral transfer equations and the SKN equations are solved for an optically thin rectangular inhomogeneous cold participating medium which is subject to externally uniform diffuse radiation on the bottom surface. The SKN solutions for spatially varing (linearly and quadratically) scattering albedos are compared with the solution of integral equations obtained by singularity subtration method. The SK3 approximation results are in excellent agreement with exact solutions.
