ABSTRACT

A thermal energy storage system designed to be used in a solid particle solar energy system is analysed with the help of a commercial Computational Heat Transfer tool. The storage consists of a large number of very small cross-section modules to ease fluidization of sand. Within each such module, the stored hot sand is fluidized to transfer heat to passing air. The hot air collected from the exits of sufficient number of such modules goes to a turbine that is on the same shaft with the compressor used for fluidization. This closed air-Brayton cycle is modelled with constant properties and using the data obtained from a series of CHT runs, an energy balance for the thermal energy storage system is achieved. Assuming half of Ivanpah plant average daily production is stored in the system, it is shown that the system is capable of continuing with the daytime electricity production for 11.22 hours during the night.
