ABSTRACT

The paper presents background and first results in development of a knowledge based (expert) system aimed to provide technical support to engineers performing assessment and management of remaining life of the high temperature pressurized components (mainly piping) in power plants. The system (ESR − Expert System for Remaining life assessment), is being developed at MPA Stuttgart (FR Germany), with support and under sponsorship of nine European utilities, and it is envisaged as a way to summarize, structure and make re-usable human expert experience gathered in current practice. The system includes parts providing assistance when dealing with: a) damage analysis, piping analysis and assessment; b) recommendations, standards, regulatory requirements and case histories; and c) engineering calculations and data storage and retrieval in/from data bases. The system runs on a personal computer.
